I wrote a review of Spotlight, Reekado Bank’s first album. I did not think much of it; it was just another week in the life of a music critic. I power through albums, rinsing them for their intrinsic values, and then I sit down and bang out the prose. I was not impressed with Spotlight. Reekado Banks won Next Rated at the Headies. It heralded a controversial ‘Ye’ moment. Olamide, in his green native attire with an awo cap and red cup, grabbed the mic. He reeled out his signee Lil Kesh’s accomplishment. Don Jazzy responded, “Oga Olamide, you can come and take the car”. It is 2023. Olamide and Don Jazzy are still on the top of Afrobeats music; Asake and Rema have replaced Lil Kesh and Reekado Banks. The stomping ground is no longer the inconsequential Headies dais. It is 02 Arena London, baby.
